  Word Processor SIG

The September Word Processor SIG will be lesson # 5.  See the description below.

Remember you can print the handouts by visiting the club web site, www.vvcclub.com and going to the handouts link.  It is always a good idea to get the handout ahead of the session so you can make sense of the discussion and ask questions to clear up any misunderstandings.   I will try to have a few handouts for visitors.  We do encourage you to bring, or invite, visitors.  Remember to help with the donation jar, we do have to pay the school for the use of the room.

Hint:  When you need a special character, such as the ¢ or the ˚ for degrees or a foreign character like é you can do this very easy with the "Insert Symbol" command from the tool bar.

Please go to our club web site and download the lesson notes before you come to the SIG.  That will save the club a lot of money on printing costs.

Remember to scroll all the way down the page so you don't miss anything!

As your old high school teacher said; “We will just do it over again until you get it.”

Join us and learn a little more about that word processor program you have.

How this SIG works:

The SIG will be structured in 5 monthly sessions, with each session building on the previous session.  If you have a reasonable grasp of word processor software you should be able to skip some sessions.  If you feel like a novice to word processing, you should try to attend each session.  However, we will repeat the sessions every 5 months so that you can repeat or catch-up in another session.

Each session will demonstrate functions, tricks and tips in the following word processor programs; MS Word, Corel WordPerfect and OpenOffice.  Word and WordPerfect are expensive programs to buy, but OpenOffice is a “full-function” word processor program that is free off the internet.  CD’s with this program ready to install will be available at the SIG for a nominal fee of $5.00.

Session 1 with be an introductory session where we discuss: Page setup and layout, the power of the paragraph, the power of the tab, the power of non-printing characters and basic editing skills.  Handout to print for class

Session 2 will be on special formats, such as making headers-footers, forced page breaks, plus formatting text in columns or tables.

Session 3 will cover inserting pictures, graphs, drawing features, music, charts and other non-text items into the document.  We will show you how to wrap text around pictures.  I will show how to lock a picture to the related paragraph, or lock it to a specific page.  Did you know that you can add charts and even sound bites to a text document? Session 4 will cover such items as: special characters, automatic text replacement, auto corrections, making bulleted and numbered lists, indenting text, line spacing, boarders, etc.  Handout to print for class

Session 5 will cover the creation of forms, bookmarks and footnotes, plus review and special topics. Handout to print for class

***This class, like all classes offered by the Verde Valley Computer Club, is offered for free to members and visitors. Visitors are invited to try us out and attend 2 classes before joining.  Donations are always gratefully accepted to help defray costs.
